Alcantareas are native to Brazil and grow in the mountains near Rio de Janeiro at elevations of around 1,500 metres. This is why most can withstand relatively cool night temperatures. Alcantareas are tall growing, very impressive bromeliads with very tall, showy flower spikes.

Alcantarea imperialis withstands relatively cool temperatures, as it naturally grows in elevations of about 1,500 metres.
