Distribution & Habitat:
Neoregelias grow naturally in Brazil, Columbia and Peru. Their habitat are the lower levels of rainforests where they can be found on fallen trees, lower branches of trees and, for some, even on rocks.
Culture:
As Neoregelias are epiphytic bromeliads their roots are often exposed to the air and are mainly designed to anchor the plant to rocks, fallen tree trunks or tree crotches. Planting Neos in cultivation therefore requires an open potting mix with excellent drainage.
Most of the nutritional requirements of Neoregelias is taken from the 'soup' in their cups - only very little food is obtained through the roots. It is essential that the cup is never allowed to dry out.
The vibrand colours and foliage of Neos are often determined by the amount of light they receive.
Description:
There are about 100 species of Neoregelia which are fondly called 'Neos'. However, there are many more cultivars bred by Bromeliad enthusiasts all over the world. Features for this group of Bromeliads is the wide selection of colour, foliage and shape. The inflorescence of Neos is rosette-shaped staying in the centre of the plant's cup. Small flowers, which rise out of the rosette, range in colour from white, blue and purple.
