Pennisetum advena 'Rubrum'
Purple Fountain Grass
Distribution & Habitat:
Pennisetum advena 'Rubrum' originates from Central Africa.
Culture:
The Purple Fountain Grass seems to be evergreen, i.e. it keeps its red appearance, in frost free areas, but it goes deciduous with frost.
It should be cut nearly to the ground in winter. This gets rid of spend grasses and flowers and provides for a fresh re-appearance in early spring.
Description:
Pennisetum advena 'Rubrum' is a clumping semi-evergreen grass which grows to about 1.5 metres tall and forms clumps of 1.5 metres wide. It has dark burgundy-red foliage and red plumes which rise attractively above the foliage.
The Purple Fountain Grass is very effective as a single clump and also as mass planting where it can provide great movement in the landscape. As other Pennisetum species can become quite weedy this hybrid species of P. advena "Rubrum' rarely seeds out.
Climate Zones:
The Purple Fountain Grass tolerates temperatures to minus 6° C.
