Archontophoenix maxima
Welsh River Palm

Distribution & Habitat:
This palm is native to northern Queensland and occurs in altitudes at 800 to 1200 meters in rainforests on the Walsh River and its tributaries in the Atherton Tablelands.

Culture:
Although Archontophoenix maxima comes from the tropics it is able to take temperatures around freezing point for a short time. It will grow in full sun, but young plants should receive some protection and plenty of water.

Description:
Only formally described in 1994 by John I. Dowe Archontophoenix maxima grows up to 25 meters tall in its natural habitat. The trunk grows to 30 cm in diameter and is expanded at the base. The leaves are 3.5 to 4.0 m long, upright, held rigid.
The inflorescence, being up to 1.5 meters long, is by far the largest in the genus. Flowers are white and the fruits, about 15 mm, become red at maturity.

Climate Zones:
Tropical. As the Walsh River Palm can withstand temperatures down to -2° C. it is worth to try planting in areas down to Sydney.
