Mt. Lewis King Palm
Distribution & Habitat:
Archontophoenix purpurea is confined to north-east Queensland where it grows naturally in the Mt. Lewis area in altitudes of 400 to 1200 metres.
Culture:
The Mt Lewis King Palm is one of the most cold hardiest in the genus taking temperatures to about -3 degrees C. When mature it'll grow in full sun and generally requires similar conditions as A. alexandrae. However, it is slower growing.
Description:
This gorgeous King Palm, with its unique purple colored crownshaft can grow to 25 metres tall in its native habitat. The leaves are up to 4 metres long, green and silver coloured on the underside of the leaflets. The purple crownshaft only develops as the palm matures. The flowers are creamy white and the fruits dark red and more than 20 mm long.
Climate Zones:
Sub-tropical to tropical. However, in sheltered positions they grow as far south as Sydney.
