Hyophorbe lagenicaulis
Bottle Palm
Distribution & Habitat:
The Bottle Palm is endemic to Round Island and Mauritius. However, it is practically extinct on Mauritius (the Mascarenes), while there are only a few individual palms on Round Island. However, it is successfully cultivated in Australia and other countries.
Culture:
Bottle Palms want a sunny, moist, but well draining position.
Description:
This is a very distinctive medium sized solitary palm which grows to about 3 meters in height. It has a grey trunk up to 60 cm in diameter with clearly noticeable ring scars. Most interesting in this palm is the bottle-shaped, grey trunk which tapers upwards to an attractive green or maroon crownshaft, forming the neck of a bottle. The crownshaft continues on into 4 to 8 leaves which can grow up to 3.5 meters long.
Climate Zones:
It is a tropical palm but should grow also in subtropical climates along the coasts of Australia. It will tolerate temperatures down to around 5° C., but constant low temperatures will hamper growth and success rates.
