Distribution & Habitat:
The Spindle Palm is native to coastal savannas and hilly forests of the Mascarene Islands, specifically Rodriguez Island. Unfortunately, this palm threatened with extinction in its native habitat.
Culture:
The Spindle Palm is relatively fast growing, This palm might experience potassium and magnesium deficiencies. Supplement should this occur. It likes a well draining moist soil and should be watered during the dry season.
Description:
This is a very distinctive palm with a solitary trunk which is spindle shaped and grey. The trunk is thinner either end, bulging out in the middle. Mature height is about 10 to 12 metres.
The leaves are feather shaped (pinnate) and the leafstalk (petiole) is yellow, which distinguishes it from the more reddish petiole of the Bottle Palm (Hyophorbe lagenicaulis).
Climate Zones:
Hyophorbe verschaffeltii is ideal for the tropical or frost-free subtropical garden. However, it will tolerate cool temperatures for short periods.
