Latania loddigesii
Blue Latan Palm

Distribution & Habitat:
Latan Palms are adapted to the seasonally dry tropical climate of their native Mauritius Island where they prosper in the hot wet summers.
In the wild they grow close to the shore on cliffs and in canyons where they do not receive the direct salt spray from the ocean.

Culture:
Latania loddigesii prefers a sunny and moist position with well draining soil. It tolerates full sun from a very young age. A tough and adaptable plant.

Description:
The Blue Latan Palm is one of the best ornamental fan palms. While young plants have beautiful red petioles and leaf margins, mature plants produce a compact crown of very leathery, stiff, blue fan leaves with leafstalks covered in thick, white wool. They grow a slender trunk to about 8 metres over the years.
Blue Latan Palms are striking tropical fan palms with a distinctive mottled blue-gray color in the leaf stems and veins when young. As they age this feature becomes less distinguished and identification is aided by the distinctive convoluted surface ornamentation of the broader end of their seeds.

Climate Zones:
Although a tropical palm the Blue Latan Palm will accept temperatures down to 0° C. for short periods of time.
