Phoenix roebelinii
Dwarf Date Palm

Distribution & Habitat:
The Dwarf Date Palm grows naturally in southern China, Laos, Vietnam. It grows there along river banks where it often has to cope with annual floods.

Culture:
Phoenix roebelinii grows in full sun or in semi-shade but usually grows much faster in full sun.
It likes a good friable, preferably slightly acidic soil.

Description:
In its native habitat Phoenix roebelinii is a clustering palm species with thin curving and twisting trunks and sparse crowns.

However, the Phoenix roebelinii presently sold in nurseries has gone through a series of hybridisation events with other Phoenix species and it is believed that along the way it lost its ability to cluster.

The Dwarf Date Palm in cultivation is single trunked, slowly grows to about 2 to 3 metres tall and features a full, rounded leaf crown. The trunk is thinner at the base (about 7 cm) and usually double as wide at the leaf crown.

Climate Zones:
Although a tropical palm species Phoenix roebelinii is very cold hardy. It can withstand temperatures down to -2.5°C.
