Archontophoenix alexandrae
Alexandra Palm, Alex Palm
Distribution & Habitat:
Alexandra palms are native to central and northern Queensland's coastal rainforests, but are also grown in gardens further south in New South Wales.
Culture:
Although Alexandra Palms are from the tropics and sub-tropics they are able to take temperatures around freezing point for a short time. They will grow in full sun if they get plenty of water. These palms are quite fast growers, averaging about one metres a year.
Description:
This is a very handsome palm which grows up to 25 metres in its natural habitat but by far not that tall in a garden situation. The leaves, up to 2 meters long, with feather-like fronds give this palm a gracefull appearance. The leaflets are bright green above with a silvery underside. A handsome flower skirt has cream flowers, followed by red fruit.
Climate Zones:
Sub-tropical to tropical. However, in sheltered positions they grow as far south as Sydney.
