Distribution & Habitat:
Most of the 26 species of the genus Calyptrocalyx are native to New Guinea, except one which comes from the Moluccas.
Culture:
Calyptrocalyx elegans requires humus-rich soil which should be moist but well draining. The application of lime should be avoided.
This palm prefers filtered light but will handle a few hours of sun when mature. It should be protected from dry, cold winds.
Description:
The Fireball Palm is an outstanding, small (4 to 5 metres), clustering palm with new growth strikingly red to maroon in colour.
There are about 26 species of Calyptrocalyx most of which have new leaves which unfold bright red or maroon in colour. Calyptrocalyx elegans is one of the species available in cultivation.
Climate Zones:
The Fireball Palm will grow as a clumping understorey palm in tropical and subtropical parts of Australia. In cooler regions it makes a stunning container plant for the patio or indoors.
