Caryota urens originates from Thailand and other countries of South East Asia.
Culture:
This species likes rich soil and regular watering and fertilising. This palm should be positioned in full sun or half shade.
Description:
This single trunk Fishtail Palm is monocarpic meaning that it dies after it has blossomed. However, the anticipated life span is about 20 to 25 years. It is a very fast growing, rather tall palm which in its natural habitat can grow to about 30 m high.
The sap of the single Fishtail Palm is very high in sugars. In the countries of its origin, the palm is tapped for its syrup which when fermented becomes an alcoholic beverage called Toddy. The syrup is also processed into a granular sugar called Jaggery.
Climate Zones:
It grows best in tropical and subtropical regions but has been reported to accept temperatures around freezing point or even lower.
