Distribution & Habitat:
Chamaedorea metallica grows naturally in wet rainforests along the Atlantic slopes and in lowland rainforests of Mexico. It often grows in limestone soils on elevations up to 600 metres high.

Culture:
Metallic palms grow well in moist, humus rich soil and are tolerant of alkaline limestone soil. They are undemanding for nutrients, but responds very well to fertiliser. Metallic palms prefer to grow in deep shade and low light conditions similar to their natural habitat.

Description:
This cute and very attractive small palm has stiff, simple and undivided leaves which are dark green with a beautiful metallic sheen.
The erect leaves grow almost straight up to a height of 70 cm and are up to 30 cm wide. The stems are 30-40 cm long and up to 2.5 cm in diametre. Metallic palms have attractive red, purple or orange flowers and small black fruits.

Climate Zones:
Chamaedorea metallica is quite cold hardy - in fact it has been grown without problems in areas where winter night temperatures are sometimes as low as -3˚ C.
