Distribution & Habitat:
Dypsis decaryi is endemic to a very small area in southeastern Madagascar.
Although this species is widely cultivated in a variety of climates, there are not much more than 1,000 individual palms left in its native habitat In it habitat Triangle Palms are threatened both by fire and the harvesting of its seeds for export.
Culture:
The Triangle Palm prefers full sun, and regular watering, however, it handles dry periods well and also a semi-shaded position. It is a very fast grower once established.
Description:
Dypsis decaryi is an very interesting palm with the foliage emerging from the trunk in a triangular arrangement. It is an outstanding specimen with its grey-green feathered leaves, about 2.5 metres, which point almost upright from the trunk, but then arch gracefully about one metre from the tip.
The leaves are grey-green in colour, pinnate, with a brown petiole covered in a whitish bloom.
The Triangle Palm should be grown in the open without anything to hide its unusual shape, thus making it a spectacular specimen plant.
Climate Zones:
Dypsis decaryi accepts temperatures down to minus 2° C. and is therefore suitable for tropical, sub-tropical and temperate areas.
