Dypsis lutescens
Golden Cane Palm
Distribution & Habitat:
Dypsis lutescens is endemic to eastern Madagascar. It grows there in rainforests on riverbanks. Although this Dypsis is widely grown in cultivation and can be seen in most back yards it is threatened to be extinct in its natural habitat.
Culture:
Dypsis lutescens is very adaptable to different climates. Although it prefers a well draining soil, full sun and plenty of moisture it copes very well with a drought situation.
Description:
The Golden Cane Palm is a multi-trunked palm, with up to 12 trunks. While other clumping palms often have a main trunk and suckering stems the Golden Cane Palm grows individual trunks like bamboo canes. These trunks can grow up to 8 metres in height. The green leaves and yellow trunks make it an attractive focus point or a spectacular visual break.
Climate Zones:
The Golden Cane Palm grows well in tropical, sub-tropical and temperate climates and will handle temperatures down to minus 3° C. for short periods of time.
