Distribution & Habitat:
This species is endemic to eastern Madagascar. It grows there in the undergrowth of rainforests sometimes at elevations of up to 1000 metres.
Culture:
This Dypsis prefers shade when young, but it will take full sun as its gets older. However, it looks best when grown in a cool shady environment with only morning sun. It needs moist but well draining soil.
Description:
Dypsis gracilis, syn. pinnatifrons, is a very popular collectors' palm from Madagascar. This slim, dainty palm has a spear-like trunk and grows to 4 metres tall. It is topped with stunning flamingo-pink big wavy new leaves. Makes a good show in a tropical garden where some shade, moisture and shelter is provided.
This palm is rare and not commonly available in nurseries.
Climate Zones:
Sub-tropical to tropical. However, in sheltered positions they grow as far south as Sydney if temperatures do not drop blow zero.
