Euterpe edulis
Jucara Palm, Heart-of-Palms
Distribution & Habitat:
Euterpe edulis occurs naturally in the coastal forests of eastern Brazil, in Paraguay and Argentina.
Culture:
The Jucara Palm prefers a warm sheltered, and moist position. The soil should be well draining. It likes filtered sun when young, but will take full sun as it matures.
Description:
Euterpe edulis is a tall, slim, solitary palm to 8 meters tall, with an attractive crown of drooping leaves. Because of their exquisitely beautiful leaves these palms look especially lovely if planted in a group of different heights. The crownshaft is dark green but often shows a red or orange colouration.
The population of this palm is being put under quite some pressure in some of its native habitats because its heart is regarded a delicacy, known as "Millioniares salad".
Climate Zones:
Euterpe edulis is not cold tolerant but has been grown in gardens in warm temperate areas.
