Johannesteijsmannia altifrons
Diamond Joey Palm

johannesteijsmanniaaltifrons

Distribution & Habitat:
Johannesteijsmannia altifrons is native to South East Asia where it grows in mountainous rainforests at elevations between 300 and 900 metres.

Culture:
Although Joey Palms can withstand quite low temperatures they resent cold and dry winds. They should be planted in a shaded or semi-shaded position.

Description:
Johannesteijmannia altifrons is an extraordinary palm, with huge simple, diamond-shaped, undivided leaves, pleated along their length. These leaves, which in older plants grow up to 3 meters tall and 1.5 meters wide, grow directly from the ground and form rosettes of up to 20 or more leaves.
Because of the destruction of rainforests and the use of the leaves for thatching this palm is endangered.

Climate Zones:
Despite its tropical appearance and its natural tropical habitat Joey Palms withstand temperatures near freezing point for short periods of time.
