Kerriodoxa elegans
White Elephant Palm

Distribution & Habitat:
Kerriodoxas have only been found naturally in two locations along the west coast of middle peninsular Thailand. It grows there on slopes in moist forests at elevations of 100 to 300m.

Culture:
Kerriodoxa elegans likes a shady, sheltered, warm, moist position and well draining soil.

Description:
This is a very elegant and beautiful palm with its completely circular fan-shaped leaves. These leaves are huge to 2 metres across, dark green and silvery white underneath. It is an understorey palm and can grow to 5 metres tall.
This palm has only recently been introduced to cultivation and is regarded as rare. Still it is being used more and more in tropical and subtropical gardens and as a container plant.

Climate Zones:
The White Elephant Palm is surprisingly hardy for a palm originating from the tropics and seem to be able to withstand temperatures down to almost freezing point without any apparent ill effects.
