Atherton Palm
Distribution & Habitat:
The Atherton Palm is endemic to North-eastern Queensland. It grows there in the rainforests of the Atherton Tablelands usually on elevations of about 800 metres where the climate is cooler. It is the only representative of its genus.
Culture:
The Atherton Palm grows best in partial shade and prefers a rich, well draining soil.
Description:
The Atherton Palm has a trunk hardly bigger than a walking stick, and therefore is often referred to as Walking Stick palm.
Laccospadix australasica is an attractive feather palm, growing as a solitary or clumping species. It is an understorey palm, reaching a height of 2 to 3 metres.
The flowers grow on a long spike that drapes down and outward from the plant. They are followed by brilliant red, berry shaped seeds which are tightly packed along the length of the spike.
Climate Zones:
Although from the tropics of Queensland in cultivation this palm will grow as far south as Sydney.
