Wedding Palm
Distribution & Habitat:
Wedding Palms are endemic to southeastern coastal Brazil. It grows there in the understorey of rainforests from the lowland up to elevations of 800 or 900 metres.
Due to forest destruction and over exploitation by seed collectors the Wedding Palm is now considered rare in its native habitat.
Culture:
Lytocaryum weddellianum does not tolerate drought and needs regular watering and a rich, friable and well-draining soil which can be slightly acidic.
Description:
If you thought you have seen most palms this is a species which might surprise you. Lytocaryum weddellianum or Microcoelum weddellianum as it was formerly known, has very fine beautifully arching leaves and a narrow trunk to 2 metres tall. The leaf crown is open and has beautifully arching, 90 cm long leaves on 30 cm long petioles with shaggily hairy margins. It is ideal for understorey planting.
Climate Zones:
The Wedding Palm cannot withstand full sun and needs protection from taller growing plants. It will, however, tolerate light frosts for a short period of time.
