Chamaedorea hooperiana
Maya Palm
Distribution & Habitat:
This palm is an understorey palm and originates from Mexico.
Culture:
It suckers tightly from the base and sends out graceful, 3.5 m long trunks for a very elegant look.
Description:
This suckering species is certainly the most beautiful of all the Chamaedoreas. This palm was only named in 1992 although it was in the collections of enthusiasts for some time, who did not know the origin of the plant. When it was discovered by Don Hodel in the wild in Mexico this mystery was solved.
Chamaedorea hooperiana is also very decorative as an indoor plant because it only requires minimum light.
Climate Zones:
The Maya Palm is an excellent choice for the tropical, sub-tropical and frost free temperate gardens.
