Pinanga coronata is a native of Jave and Sumatra and occurss there in the undergrowth of rainforests.
Culture:
Pinanga coronata requires a shady situation and humus rich well draining soil. Regular watering is essential.
Description:
The Ivory Cane Palm is a clustering species. In cultivation its canes grow to about 4 to 5 metres but in its natural habitat speciemen with canes of up to 7 metres can be found. The canes are about 5 cm in diametre, slightly thicker at the crownshaft. They are light green to ivory in colour and beautyfully ringed with brown leaf base scars.
The leaves are 1.5 metres long and nearly 1 metre wide and grow on petioles which are covered in cinnamon-coloured scales. The leaf colour is emerald green and new leaves appear often in a beautiful light pink.
Climate Zones:
The Ivory Cane Palm is one of the hardiest Pinangas. Winter temperatures of around 0° C. have been reported to having no ill effects on the grows of the palm making it suitable for tropical, subtropical and temperate areas.
