Distribution & Habitat:
Atractocarpus fitzalanii grows naturally in the rainforests from Cooktown in the north of Queensland down to about Mackay.
Culture:
The Native Gardenia grows best in tropical and sub-tropical areas and in cultivation also in temperate climates as far south as Sydney.
Description:
Atractocarpus fitzalanii is an evergreen rainforest tree with very attractive glossy green leaves. This small tree (about 5 metres tall) blooms in spring with highly fragrant, small, white, flowers which resemble those of Gardenias. It also produces large, edible, yellow fruits hence its other common name Yellow Mangosteen.
Climate Zones:
Although a tropical plant it is exceptionally drought hardy and it can handle brief, light frosts.
