Distribution & Habitat:
Strelitzia nicolai grows naturally in the evergreen coastal forests of eastern South Africa and also in Mazambique.

Culture:
The Giant Bird of Paradise prefers rich, moist soil with good drainage. It grows in full sun to part shade. The plant tolerates light frost. Propagation is by division of clumps, pubs and from seed.

Description:
This giant relative of Strelitzia reginae grows to a tree-size plant of up to 6 metres tall with huge banana-like leaves. It bears 45 cm purple and white flowers which occur early winter to mid-spring.

Climate Zones:
Strelitzia nicolai is quite suitable for tropical, subtropical and warm temperate areas. They like full sun or semi shade and require moderate watering.
